Andrew Roachford reveals how the American music industry struggled to market a Black artist with a guitar—and why he refused to let the record company confine his music to a convenient category.
In this revealing career-spanning interview, Roachford tells the story behind “Cuddly Toy,” the song that transformed him from a working musician into a recognisable pop star almost overnight. He explains why the track was originally created for his live shows, why it was added after his debut album had already been completed and why the record company objected to its title.
Andrew also discusses growing up in a musical Caribbean family in South London, playing piano from the age of four, performing in Soho clubs while still at school and learning about passion and authenticity from Joe Strummer and The Clash.
He remembers the extraordinary reactions he received from Billy Joel, Elton John and Michael Jackson, playing Wembley Stadium and eventually beginning a new chapter with Mike Rutherford and Mike + The Mechanics.
The conversation also becomes deeply personal as Andrew reflects on his absent father, the death of his younger brother and the way music has helped both him and his listeners survive grief, illness and loss.
