Glen Matlock helped write the songs that defined the Sex Pistols—but his musical story stretches far beyond those explosive early years.

In this interview with Steve Blame, Glen discusses his contribution to Pretty Vacant, Anarchy in the UK and God Save the Queen, the influences behind the music, and why the band’s success depended on everyone playing their part.

He takes us back to his childhood, discovering The Kinks and the Faces, and working at Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood’s shop on the King’s Road. He recalls the people, clothes, clubs and outsider culture that surrounded the formation of the Sex Pistols.

Glen also shares his perspective on John Lydon, Sid Vicious, the Bill Grundy television appearance and the cancelled gigs that intensified tensions within the band. He explains the connection between ABBA’s SOS and Pretty Vacant, and gives his candid reaction to Danny Boyle’s series Pistol.

Beyond the Pistols, we discuss Rich Kids, working with Blondie, Iggy Pop and the Faces, his autobiography Triggers: A Life in Music, and the social commentary on his album Consequences Coming.

Through it all runs a simple ambition: to keep working, keep writing and look towards the next song.
