Karen Carpenter possessed one of popular music’s most recognisable voices—but author Lucy O’Brien argues that her musicianship, creativity and determination have never received the recognition they deserve.

In this revealing interview, Lucy discusses her acclaimed biography Lead Sister: The Story of Karen Carpenter and presents Karen as far more than the fragile figure of popular mythology. She was an exceptional drummer, a gifted vocal arranger and an active creative presence in the studio.

We explore Karen’s complicated relationship with her mother and brother Richard Carpenter, the male-dominated music industry that encouraged her to leave the drums, and the anxiety and perfectionism that shaped her life. Lucy also examines Karen’s struggle for artistic independence, her rejected solo album and the devastating illness she was largely left to confront without the treatment available today.

Lucy reveals what musicians who worked with Karen told her, why Richard Carpenter declined to participate in the book and what Karen reportedly said to producer Phil Ramone the day before her death.

The conversation also covers Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story, Sonic Youth’s reassessment of The Carpenters, President Nixon, A&M Records, Rod Temperton, Karen’s marriage and Lucy’s deeply emotional visit to the studio where The Carpenters recorded their greatest music.

Lead Sister: The Story of Karen Carpenter is written by Lucy O’Brien.
