An unexpected call sent Kevin Armstrong to Abbey Road without knowing who he would meet. David Bowie walked in—and a session that began with “That’s Motivation” led to “Absolute Beginners”, Live Aid and a lasting working relationship.
In this conversation with Steve Blame, Kevin recalls arranging “Dancing in the Street” with Bowie and Mick Jagger, putting together Bowie’s Live Aid band, and experiencing the extraordinary atmosphere at Wembley.
We also explore his work with Thomas Dolby, including “She Blinded Me with Science”, his long association with Iggy Pop, playing with Prefab Sprout, his encounters with Paul McCartney, and joining Tin Machine. Kevin explains how one of his own compositions became the foundation of Bowie’s “Outside”.
Alongside the stories in his book Absolute Beginner, Kevin speaks openly about losing his brother, finding authenticity, the freedom of being a supporting musician, and the self-doubt that can remain despite a remarkable career.
