Martin McAloon spent decades as the bass player in Prefab Sprout, alongside his brother Paddy McAloon, one of British pop's most admired songwriters. Now, after years away from performing, he's stepping out of the shadows to bring those extraordinary songs back to the stage — on his own terms.**

In this revealing interview with former MTV presenter Steve Blame, Martin talks about growing up with Paddy in a small County Durham village, their shared musical influences, the formation of Prefab Sprout and the creative partnership behind albums including *Swoon*, *Steve McQueen*, *From Langley Park to Memphis* and *Jordan: The Comeback*.

But Martin's story is also one of personal reinvention. After years working as a lecturer, artist and behind-the-scenes musician, he found the courage to become a frontman — despite never considering himself a singer.

He discusses the fear of performing alone, his relationship with Paddy, the importance of Thomas Dolby, the pressures of the record industry and why he refuses simply to recreate the original Prefab Sprout recordings.

There are also fascinating stories about unreleased songs, his contribution to the band's success, and what it means to find your own voice after spending a lifetime as someone else's wingman.
