**PHILLIP BOA — THE ART OF SAYING NO**

Phillip Boa has spent decades making music on his own terms. As the creative force behind Phillip Boa & The Voodooclub, he became one of Germany's most distinctive alternative artists — combining post-punk, experimental pop, literature and an uncompromising artistic vision.

In this conversation with former MTV Europe presenter Steve Blame, Phillip talks about the creative freedom that shaped his music, his admiration for David Bowie, and why he was never afraid to challenge the record companies.

At the heart of the interview is *Boaphenia*, the landmark 1993 album revisited for its 30th anniversary edition in 2023. Phillip explains how he wrote much of the original material in London, discovered a new creative world in Malta, and worked with producers including Tony Visconti and Craig Leon.

He also discusses the discovery of archive recordings, the creation of new songs incorporating Pia Lund's original vocals, and the unusual experience of returning to music he made three decades earlier.

But the conversation goes far beyond one album.

Phillip reflects on being naturally shy, feeling like an outsider, the influence of Bowie, Roxy Music and Japan, and why he believes creative independence matters more than commercial expectations.

He also talks about artificial intelligence, the dangers of relying on second-hand experience, the inspiration he draws from literature, and the real person behind his song “Container Love.”
