What happens when a singer known around the world for her extraordinary voice suddenly can’t sing anymore?
Sam Brown is the singer, songwriter and musician behind the international hit “Stop!”—but her career reaches far beyond one defining song. She grew up surrounded by music as the daughter of rock-and-roll star Joe Brown and acclaimed session singer Vicki Brown, began working professionally while still a teenager and went on to perform with some of the biggest names in music.
In this revealing interview, Sam discusses the success of “Stop!”, her discomfort with pop stardom and her determination to make music on her own terms. She also talks about working with Pink Floyd and David Gilmour, touring with Jools Holland, her friendship with George Harrison and taking part in the unforgettable Concert for George.
Most movingly, Sam explains what happened when problems with her voice forced her to stop singing professionally. She describes the personal and practical consequences of losing the instrument upon which her career had been built—and how teaching ukulele, songwriting and new recording technology eventually offered her a different route back into music.
Her 2023 album Number 8 marked her return to recording after fifteen years. It did not attempt to pretend that nothing had happened. Instead, Sam found a new way to use the voice she had and continue creating.
This is the story of “Stop!”, fame, family, loss, reinvention and the refusal to let music disappear.
