What happened to Britain—and how do you turn what you see around you into music? Jason Williamson and Andrew Fearn of Sleaford Mods talk with me about class, creativity, addiction, politics and the sound they built together.
We begin with their working-class backgrounds, school, family and the music that caught their attention. Jason discusses losing everything more than once, the years of drinking and drugs, and how his relationship with those experiences has changed. Andrew talks about finding his own way into music and education.
We also get into how Sleaford Mods write and record: Andrew’s stark, distinctive tracks, Jason’s lyrics and the space they leave for each other. Then the conversation turns to Britain, political anger, the cost of living, the reach of their music beyond the UK, and whether ordinary fans can still afford to see live shows. We end with a question about the value of “Jolly Fucker.”
