Grammy-winning producer Steve Levine looks back on 50 years in music—from engineering sessions with The Clash to creating Culture Club’s breakthrough sound and working with Stevie Wonder, The Beach Boys, Motörhead and many more.
Steve explains how childhood encounters with Jamaican records, Motown and The Beatles taught him to listen closely to rhythm and production. After seeing Phil Spector and engineer Larry Levine working at Gold Star Studios, he knew that the recording studio was where he belonged.
Beginning as a tape operator at CBS Studios in 1975, Steve learned by watching producers and engineers from around the world. He recalls working on sessions with The Clash, XTC and Sailor before meeting the musicians who would become Culture Club.
Steve reveals how Culture Club developed their distinctive musical identity, what made Boy George such an exceptional studio singer and why the relationship between a producer and an artist can transform a recording.
He also remembers receiving a telephone call from Stevie Wonder, recording The Beach Boys and the extraordinary moment when he told Brian Wilson that he needed singing lessons. Brian initially stormed out—but the encounter ultimately created an enduring relationship built on trust.
The conversation also covers Steve’s work with Lemmy and Motörhead, winning Producer of the Year, the unexpected effect that success had on his career and his concerns about artificial intelligence, copyright and the future of music.
