THOMAS DOLBY on his latest tour, technology, fame, and his use of AI

44:05•1,445 views
Thomas Dolby reveals how a shy, socially anxious musician created the distinctive MTV character behind “She Blinded Me with Science”—and how that carefully constructed persona helped turn him into one of the most recognisable artists of the 1980s.
In this in-depth Pop: The History Makers interview, Thomas discusses MTV, electronic music, synthesizers, fame, nostalgia and his lifelong fascination with using new technology in unexpected ways.
He explains why MTV helped adventurous artists reach radio, how early electronic equipment forced musicians to invent their own solutions, and why technological limitations frequently produced more original music than unlimited modern choice.
Thomas also remembers working with Paddy and Martin McAloon of Prefab Sprout, selecting songs for Steve McQueen, collaborating with Joni Mitchell and observing Stevie Wonder’s extraordinary relationship with music, space and sound.
The conversation explores David Bowie, Kraftwerk, Gary Numan, The Human League and Soft Cell; Thomas’s attempts to make machines sound cinematic and orchestral; his move into Silicon Valley; and why he does not personally think of himself as an electronic-music pioneer.
He also discusses returning to the stage, the fans who have carried his music through their lives and his ambition to reinterpret his work with a symphony orchestra.
