Ultra Naté is reaching a new audience with “Movin’ To The Sun.” This interview was recorded before the song became a hit, so we don’t discuss it here. Instead, we go back through the extraordinary career that brought her to this moment: from Baltimore’s clubs and her first record to “Free,” independence and the community that has always been part of her music.
Ultra tells me how her mother’s records shaped her musical imagination, why she left a path towards medicine, and how a chance meeting with the Basement Boys changed her life. We talk about the early days of house music, the upheaval of being dropped by a major label, and the making and meaning of “Free.”
She also reflects on becoming an independent artist, creating her Deep Sugar parties, and writing “UNBREAKABLE” in support of the LGBTQIA+ community. It’s a conversation about music, freedom, setbacks and finding a way forward.
