Wolfgang Flür opens up about leaving Kraftwerk, rediscovering his musical identity and finding his own voice after one of electronic music’s most influential chapters.
Best known for his years as Kraftwerk’s electronic percussionist, Wolfgang explains why he needed a long period away from the group—and from music itself—before he could begin again. He talks candidly about the limitations he felt performing programmed music, his conversations with Florian Schneider and the need to remove what he calls the “Kraftwerk virus” from his system.
The conversation also explores Wolfgang’s childhood in the ruins of post-war Germany, his opposition to military service, his difficult relationship with his father’s generation and the influence of writer Wolfgang Borchert.
Wolfgang discusses the making of Magazine 1, his developing singing voice and collaborations with Peter Duggal, Claudia Brücken, Peter Hook, Midge Ure, Juan Atkins and other artists. He also recounts an emotional final encounter with Florian Schneider.
